Wilt
Wilt is a band that may not be on many people’s radars, but absolutely should be. As the only opener, they had big shoes to fill in terms of preparing the crowd for Mothica, and they did not disappoint. Their performance was encapsulating, and even though I have never listened to them, I could not look away. It was impossible not to bop and dance along to the upbeat alt-rock band. Wilt is ramping up to release their debut album in just a few short weeks, and judging by the live rendition performed, you won’t want to skip it.

If there were only one word I could use to describe a Mothica show, it would be ethereal. She executes with a confidence on stage that can only be explained by being born for this. Through her own trials and tribulations, she’s grown into a strong force to be reckoned with and is a lighthouse leading listeners out of the dark, which comes to full fruition during her shows. On Sunday, September 13th, Indianapolis was lucky enough to experience a rare Mothica headline show where she held the crowd’s undivided attention and staked her claim on attendees for an hour. Her live performance left no detail forgotten, featuring dreamy stage design with glowy backlights, a floral-wrapped mic stand (also holding a bra thrown at her the night before), an impeccably curated stage outfit, and perfectly moody choreography.
While Mothica’s dark alternative pop music focuses on very heavy subject matter, her comedic personality shines through in the stories she tells to keep the vibes lighter. Mothica also took a moment out of her set to hear from the crowd, calling for any stories fans had relating to her songs. As the mic was passed through the crowd, we heard stories of people skipping class to cry along to her song “Highlights”, a pilot who was at the previous night's show but then proceeded to fully fly to Indianapolis for the night’s show, and how her fans generally have high IQ’s (thanks for the compliment!). Through this set break, the sense of community between Mothica fans really shone through. The crowd was made up of those who not only love her music, but have also overcome their struggles and found their people. The night consisted of top hits like “Casualty, " " Buzzkill, " " Vices”, and “Weapon,” but also threw it back with a special rendition of her “Can You Feel My Heart” cover and older songs like “Absinthe”. We were also treated to not one, but two unreleased songs, giving the crowd something to look forward to hearing again. As the night came to a close and the crowd departed, a buzz of energy reverberated through the walls of Hi-Fi.
